Lunatic Difficulty — Unlock & Build

Pragmata's Lunatic Mode is what the game looks like once it stops being polite. Unlock conditions, stat priorities, and a boss-fight template that actually works.

Lunatic is Pragmata's hardest difficulty — unlocked only after you've beaten the game on any difficulty, and only available on a fresh New Game (not New Game+). Enemies hit harder, move more aggressively, and bosses turn into genuine healthbars-on-rails. This page covers the exact unlock path, the stat priorities that matter when one mistake deletes a Repair Canister, and a proven boss-fight template built around Overdrive Protocol and Photon Laser burns.

How to Unlock Lunatic

  • Clear the main story on any difficulty. Easy, Normal, or Hard all count.
  • Start a new game. Lunatic cannot be selected from New Game+. You pick it from the difficulty menu on a brand-new save.
  • What changes: enemies are more aggressive, have higher HP, and hit harder. Bosses in particular have much larger healthbars and take significantly longer to drop.
  • What you keep: from the first menu, the Shelter's Unit Printer lets you print more weapon types than were available on your first Normal run — the game gives you extra firepower to match the extra pressure.

Going in, have patience. A Lunatic boss fight is closer in length to a Monster Hunter hunt than a Sekiro duel — you will be there for a while.

What to Upgrade First

Same general priorities as a normal run, with the dial turned harder toward survivability and hack damage.

  • HP — max priority. Repair Canisters don't keep up with Lunatic's damage spikes; more HP = more surviving.
  • Suit Damage / Hacking Damage — most of your kills run through the hack → OPEN State → shoot pipeline. Scaling Diana's hacking damage and Hugh's core damage output is the biggest ROI.
  • Pure Lunum refinement — sweep for every safe you can open and every Pure Lunum node you can reach. The extra Upgrade Components matter more here than they ever did on Normal.
  • Weapon-slot damage — dead last. Weapon damage upgrades only apply to the yellow attack-slot pickup weapons. Since those are finite magazines anyway, raw stats on them are less efficient than the items above.

The Core Kit for General Combat

For clearing the world (not bosses), a proven Lunatic loadout looks like this:

  • Heat-buildup mod setup on your primary — mods that stack heat on a target as you land rounds. Paired with the Pulse Carbine, you fill an enemy's heat gauge quickly, which exposes their weak point for a huge critical hit payoff.
  • Pulse Carbine as your rapid-fire tool of choice. Sustained fire is how the heat stacks work.
  • Object Scan + Auto-Hack + Cleanse maxed from previous progression (you'll have this by the time Lunatic matters).
  • Keep Overdrive Protocol on standby for emergency rooms — it's a get-out-of-jail card on red-zone ambushes.

The one place this build falls flat is on bosses: boss heat gauges fill much more slowly than standard enemies. Don't rely on the heat-crit loop for boss DPS. Swap plans.

Boss Fight Template

There is a repeatable, boss-agnostic template that works for the harder Lunatic fights — especially the late-game gauntlet. The idea is simple: open with Overdrive, unload a Photon Laser into the boss's back, finish the stun window with a Jackhammer.

Pre-Fight Prep

  1. Fill Overdrive Protocol before the fight starts. The meter charges as you land hacks, so clear the lead-in area thoroughly to top it off.
  2. Save before the arena. If the pacing of the run dumped you at the boss with a half-full meter, reload from a pre-fight save rather than walking in under-prepared.
  3. Inventory check: you want a Photon Laser and a Jackhammer in the attack slot. A Charge Piercer spawns in many arenas — plan to grab it mid-fight.

Opening Burst

  1. Trigger Overdrive Protocol immediately on the boss — it slams them into a long stagger window.
  2. Circle around behind the boss and aim at their back panel.
  3. Hold the fire trigger on your Photon Laser until the magazine is empty. Do not release — dropping the trigger mid-burst can drop the damage multiplier.
  4. After each successful hack during the burst, release and retap the hack trigger so Diana can queue the next hack. This is the part most players miss.
  5. When the Photon Laser is dry and the boss is still staggered, close and finish the stagger window with a Jackhammer. Big, ugly, effective.

Between Bursts

  1. Dodge, don't tank. Focus on staying alive and reading telegraphs — Lunatic boss hits are not something you shrug off.
  2. Keep hacking small windows. Every successful hack feeds Overdrive's meter back up for a second burst.
  3. Charge the Charge Piercer (found in most arenas) while the boss is in its attack cycle. When you land a hack, fire the charged shot immediately during OPEN State. That's chunk-damage with zero ammo waste.

Second Overdrive

Around 40–45% boss HP, Overdrive Protocol should be full again.

  1. Pick up the arena's fresh Photon Laser (or the next attack-slot weapon it spawns).
  2. Repeat the opening burst — Overdrive → stagger → Photon Laser into the back → Jackhammer to close.
  3. If the last sliver of HP survives, Jackhammer a final slam to close the fight.

Why This Template Works

  • Overdrive Protocol is the only reliable stagger on Lunatic bosses. Trying to chip them down with standard hacks alone is a war of attrition you won't win.
  • Photon Laser has the highest effective DPS of the attack-slot weapons, when sustained. Releasing the trigger breaks the ramp; holding it through an OPEN State is where the numbers spike.
  • Jackhammer closes. It's a short-range finisher — if you try to open with it at range you'll waste its windows. Saving it for stagger-end moments is what unlocks its damage.
  • Charge Piercer as a filler means you're not idle between Overdrives. You're building resources back while still doing real damage.

General Lunatic Survival Tips

  • Stay in Sector order. Don't try to rush late-Sector gear in early Sectors — Lunatic enemy density punishes under-leveled kits.
  • Return to the Shelter often. Repair Canisters, new printables, and the Firmware Updater are your lifeline.
  • Red Gate Keys are non-negotiable. You'll need every Pure Lunum you can unlock to keep stats scaling.
  • Pre-arena saves. If a boss pacing feels wrong, reloading from a save is faster than retrying on low resources.
  • Patience beats DPS. On Lunatic, living through one more dodge is worth more than one more shot.
